Coach Crystal Engemann is the JH girl’s track coach. This is a Q/A with this year.
Q: How do you think the season went?
A: This year’s track season went so well! We had so many PRs broken each week, great 8th-grade leadership, and some wonderful encouragement by most everyone too.
Q: Who do you think worked harder: 7th or 8th grade?
A: I think the distance kids probably worked the hardest, so a mixture of 7th and 8th graders. They’re just built differently and know that they have to put in the miles if they want to be successful . . . you can’t just rely on talent alone in the longer distances.
Q: What was your favorite part?
A: My favorite part of track is seeing the grit and mental toughness that goes into competing, and just giving it everything you have out there, for yourself and your team.
Q: What was the saddest part?
A: The saddest parts are when someone has a bunch of talent, and they slide on the practice workouts to get better. Then when they go up against harder competition, they usually don’t fare as well. It’s one of those life lessons that everyone has to learn for themselves. I had to learn it too when I was younger.
Q: How many years have you been coaching track?
A: This was my 3rd year coaching JH track, and the best spot to have a track meet is on your home field when your friends and family can be there to cheer you on.
Q: What do you think was the best spot to have a track meet?
A: When Baldwin hosts, it’s always well-run, and ends at a reasonable hour!
