For some BHS Bulldog athletes, it’s not just always about playing skills. Superstitious beliefs can play a key role in their sport performance.
Some players’ traditions are to hype up their teammates.
“I have to do a handshake before every game with my teammates Emily Paget and Lauren Berg,” senior volleyball player Claire Baker said.
Others traditions are individual.
“My superstitions before games is to get 8 hours of sleep the night before and then to listen to Chip On My Shoulder by Rod Wave before the game and wear white nike socks,” junior basketball player Leo Schoenberger said.
Many students’ traditions are to listen to a song to hype them up before a big match or game.
“I listen to a specific song on the way to events, and sometimes before big matches,” freshman wrestler Elli Lisher said. “It gets my hyped up, and I sometimes think it helps me do better. I also take off my jacket 2 matches before, and if I do it before or after I feel like I won’t do as well.”
And some athletes do their hair a certain way as a good luck charm.
“I have several superstitions. I listen to the same 3 songs before every game, pre wrap my shin guards with pink pre wrap, and I do a new hairstyle every game because I believe that they make every game a clean slate, and really put me into the game mindset.”
Many BHS students have pre-game traditions that they think help them to win a big game or match, and they all believe they do something different for their performance.
