Harris is a wrestling coach and has been at BHS and BJHS for a while. But he has decided to leave the Baldwin wrestling system and go for something bigger. Something more intense and more aggressive than junior high and high school.
Q: Did you wrestle in junior high/high school?
“Yes I did, I have wrestled all of my life since I was about 5 years old.”
Q: When did you start coaching wrestling?
“I first was an assistant coach at Baldwin HS while I was attending Baker University as a student from 1991-1995.”
Q: When did the idea of coaching for Baker pop into your head?
“The job came open in the summer of 2023, I was talking to Coach May and other Baker people and they all encouraged me to apply for the position.”
Q: What made you decide to go coach for girls’ wrestling at Baker instead of staying with BJHS/BHS wrestling?
“Bottom line it was because it was a new challenge for me, I loved coaching at Baldwin for many years, and I had a lot of fun and a lot of great memories, but I knew I would never forgive myself if I didn’t consider this new challenge in my life and chose the comfort of my current role instead, it really was just me choosing challenge over comfort and becoming excited about a new environment, level, and situation.”
Q: At your first practice coaching the Baker girls, was it awkward? Did you know anybody there?
“It was definitely a new experience, but the team members were all great to work with and made it a positive transition.”
Q: What is your favorite part of coaching the girls?
“I love recruiting and building the culture of the program and the team, I love how much passion the girls put into it and how hard they compete, I love how badly they want to win and have success, and most of all it is a great experience coaching a lot of very positive and driven and hard-woking young people, I really love everything about it. And to top it all off, it is at a school I have grown up having so much pride in. I love Baker U.”
Q: What is your least favorite part of coaching the girls?
“I don’t have any least favorite parts, it is really hard juggling everything I do and the time involved, but I am having a blast so that makes it all worth it.”
Q: If you could change one thing, what would it be?
“We really need a dedicated facility at Baker, we share time with 4 groups and pull mats out, but we make it work for now, we have plans to get funding for a new facility very soon, once that happens, it will make things a lot better.”
