Coach Thomas Broxterman has started his first year as a cross country coach at BHS after Coach Mike Spielman retired after 34 years of coaching. Broxterman is looking forward to the upcoming season of girls cross country and has hopes to win State Champions with his athletes.
“We have goals to win the state championship but most of all, we want to be healthy,” Broxterman said.
Not only do the coaches want success for their team, of course the athletes do too.
“I’m most looking forward to upcoming meets and we can hopefully go to state,” said freshman Madeline Massey, who has ran cross country since she was in 6th grade.
Most people, when asked if they enjoy running long distances, immediately answer by saying no. But if you look at running with a different perspective, opinions might change.
“Running, when I first started, I hated it. But it’s become something that can be peaceful and it has definitely been therapeutic for me,” said junior Irelyn Kennedy, who has been running cross country since freshman year.
Not only do the members enjoy running, another fun part about cross country is the team and the relationships they have and make along the way.
“What I most enjoy about being on the team is team bonding and how we do a lot of fun things together,” said sophomore Rachel Watkins, who has been running cross country for 2 years.
The cross country team isn’t just a sports team. It brings not only the athletes, but the coaches as well, together to make relationships.
“I enjoy the interactions with the athletes and seeing them improve over the season,” Broxterman said.
