The team is made up of seventeen girls. Coach Jim Ashcraft is the head coach of the team and teaches physics at the high school. He has been head coach for five years. He loves to coach the sport because he enjoys playing it and he likes passing on that love.
“It’s a sport that you can play for your entire life, it involves strategy, small courts so you don’t have to cover as much distance and there is pressure,” Ashcraft said.
This 24-25 season has four senior players: Addie Madl, Emily Howarter, Ella Ward and Lily Breedlove. The top players of the season are Madl, Howarter and Ward.
Ward was asked what she wanted students to know about tennis, she said, “I would definitely say to join because it is super fun, very lowkey and you will definitely get better by the end of the season.”
A few of the new coming players also had a few things to say about the sport, including why they joined the team this fall.
“I’ve never played a sport like tennis before and wanted an opportunity to make new friends,” said freshman Kambell Franke.
When asked what their favorite part of the team was most of the players said they liked the kind atmosphere and how all the girls help each other out without judgment.
“The memories you make with your friends and teammates.” Junior Lauren McCart said, “I love to see the improvements made by the players who are new to the sport.”
“My favorite part of the team is how nice and supportive everyone is,” freshman Addelyn Hinderliter said.
The girls were surveyed on if they liked singles or doubles better and it was an almost even split, though a few more girls favored singles.
“I like doubles because my doubles partner is my best friend and she knows how to make me laugh even when we are losing,” Franke said.
When asked about her goals for the season, McCart said, “Make the new players, especially freshman, have a fun time so they want to come out next year.”
The biggest meets of the season are the Varsity BIT that they had in the week of Sept. 16, Bonner Springs Invitational that is on Oct. 3 and League is the week after that.
