There is a new head coach in boys cross country this year with head coach Thomas Broxterman. He is the head coach of the girls and the boys teams.
“Freshman Landon Whaley and senior Nicholas Johnson have stood out to me the most throughout the beginning of the season,” Broxterman said.
Johnson ran a sub-18 minute and medaled in the meat last Saturday and Whaley ran a sub-19 minute.
“It is an awesome experience getting to know the upperclassmen because most are on varsity,” Whaley said.
The practices have gotten more intense also as the players start to get more conditioned to running a lot.
“Towards the end of the season the players have more intensive workouts but with more rest in between,” Broxterman said.
“I learned that cross country was way more than just running, it’s also about controlling your pace and breathing and lots of mentality,” Whaley said.
The Regionals for boys cross country is Oct. 26. The top teams qualify for the 4A State Championships, which are held at the Wamego Country Club. Baldwin has a long tradition of winning state trophies at the State meet.
