The 12u and 14u girls at the Baldwin Junior High and Baldwin High School went to Green Bay to qualify for the big tournament located in Florida.
“It was fun, we all had a great time,” said Alyssa Flick, a wide receiver for the 12u team and an 8th grader. “I think it was very different from what we were playing before and the competition was way better than what we were playing in KC. It was a great experience, and now we know what it will be like next time.”
The coaches are Brian Hamrick and Ben Watts. They started this team and they coach both teams. There is also a 10u team that is currently being coached by coach Chambers.
“We did alright. It wasn’t what we were hoping for but it wasn’t terrible.” said Hadley Watts, the quarterback for the 14u team and an 8th grader. “We could have caught the ball more and pulled more flags than we did.”
To qualify for the Florida tournament for regionals they had to win another tournament. They both lost at the Arrowhead Stadium, so they had to go to another tournament to try again. They chose Green Bay. They won that tournament and got to go to Florida. 12u went 0-4, but 14u went 1-4.
“My favorite part about going to Florida for flag football was for the experience and getting to know all of my teammates better,” said Maleka Flory, the center for the 12u team and an 8th grader. “I hadn’t ever been to Florida before and even though we didn’t win it was still a great experience. I got to be with my teammates more and get to know them more too.”
These teams are one of the first girls flag football teams for Baldwin City. They had the new flag football coach for Baker and one of their players show up to some of their practices.
