The new season for softball is about to begin. They had some seniors leave but they have many freshmen coming up to take their spot.
“I’m excited to see how the returning players adjust to new roles,” coach Chad Scoby said, “whether that’s going from JV to Varsity or playing a new position. I’m also interested to see how the new players mesh into our program. We graduated four starting varsity players last year, so the first few weeks will be centered around finding the best line-up with the pieces we have.”
The newest coaches, Tracie Weege-Flory and Sarah Johnson, will be coaching for their 3rd year.
Coach Weege-Flory has advice for upcoming players and freshmen “Come out with a great attitude, be coachable, ready to play anywhere. Always support the team and cheer them on and just remember to have fun and love the game!”
Sophomore Aftyn Willis will be returning to the team, and will also be ready to compete with the team.
“I think I will do good because I struggled with confidence last year,” Willis said, “but now I am more confident about what I can do and can’t do.”
Last year the team won 6 games, but lost 14.
“Last year we were 6-14. Offensively, we need to get better at putting the ball in play,” said Scoby. “A major focus this year will be bunting and base running, which will hopefully allow us to manufacture some runs. Defensively, we need to be consistent at making the routine plays and limit the other team from having big innings. We gave teams too many “extra” outs and as a result our ERA wasn’t very good.”
The returning players are excited for the new girls to join and also to make new friends and more memories.
“I am most excited for the new girls who are joining and making new memories,” Willis said.
