Stevanus wins ‘beyond the call of duty’ award

Gary “G” Stevanus is the Baldwin High School Athletic Trainer who just recently won an award for going beyond the call of duty. It is an award given to those who put in the extra work to help make sports safer.  Stevanus has also served in many organizations to help perfect the idea of high school sports.

“I enjoy the fact that Baldwin has great kids — BHS and the school district as a whole have a very family like atmosphere,” Stevanus said. “I’m glad that I can be a part of it.”

Some of the groups are KATS’s Secondary Schools Committee, Sports Medicine Advisory Committee, Football Contact Limitation Committee, Cross Country Safety Committee, and many others.

“It’s a nice honor, I don’t think I deserve it more than anyone else, we put in a lot of hours and we do a lot of things behind the scenes,” Stevanus said. “I don’t deserve it more than anyone else, but it was a very nice honor.”

Stevanus works a lot outside of his normal hours to try and keep kids safe during sports like football. He does much more for sports here in Baldwin than many realize.

“I don’t really know what I did to deserve it other than I have been very heavily involved with the safety in football campaign, which is trying to promote athletic trainers into secondary school settings,” he said.

Stevanus is always helping our school and many other schools to create a safer way of playing sports. Stevanus, along with many others, have joined to try to hep make a healthy and positive future experience for student-athletes.

“G he helps me by always being there,” said BHS senior Bailey Vesco, who participates in football and wrestling. “Every single day I go get my ankles taped by him. I spend a lot of time in that room and he gets to hear me complain a lot, he’s just a really good dude he helps us a lot and really cares about his job.”
