The Kansas City Chiefs are off to a 4-0 start, the Royals just missed the playoffs by only a few games, and Sporting Kansas City is currently second in the Eastern Conference. With all of the recent success, it is hard not to get excited about sports in the next few years to come in Kansas City.
But what lead to all the success?
Kansas City Chiefs
The Chiefs hired new coach Andy Reid in January. Reid came in after a fourteen-year tenure with the Philadelphia Eagles.
The veteran coach has turned around the franchise, who went 2-14 last year, with wins over Jacksonville, Dallas, Reid’s former team Philadelphia and most impressively the New York Giants.
Now, after one of the worst seasons in the Chief’s franchise, the club sits with four other teams that hold the title as undefeated, including fellow AFC West opponent the Denver Broncos.
The Chiefs are back in action at 12 p.m. Oct. 6 at LP Field against the Tennessee Titans.
Kansas City Royals
The Kansas City Royals ended on a bright note with a 4-1 victory over the Chicago White Sox, but the club cannot help but feel disappointed, falling just short of the AL wildcard by 5.5 games back.
The Royals finished with a 86-76 record, the club’s first since 2003 and second since 1994, and brought excitement to fans in the final stages of the season as the team looked to push for a wildcard berth into the playoffs.
A team that even lead the AL Central many times throughout the season, the Royals hope to bounce back in 2014 and look for their first playoff berth since 1985 when they won it all.
Sporting Kansas City
Just a few years ago, many Kansas City sports fans would not have even considered Sporting KC, or the “Kansas City Wizards” as they were known as before 2011, a legitimate sports team.
Now, Sporting Kansas City is just as, if not more, followed than the Chiefs or Royals. Sporting KC logos are found in more and more rearview windows every day, and Sporting Kansas City apparel is becoming a common fashion choice to many citizens of Kansas City and its surrounding areas.
Perhaps the rebranding to “Sporting Kansas City” and the addition of new stadium Sporting Park, which is arguably the best venue in the MLS, turned the club around in the foreseeable future.
The boys in blue sit in contention for the Supporter’s Shield, given to the MLS club with the most points at the end of the year, and are six points away from already locking up a playoff spot. Sporting also stands in second place in the Eastern Conference, looking up only to the New York Red Bulls. The team also includes US international players Graham Zusi and hometown defender Matt Besler.
Sporting has a chance to get three more points at 6:30 p.m. on Saturday when they take on Columbus Crew on the road.
The successful revolution of sports teams in Kansas City has arrived and within the next few years, many Kansas City sports fans could be boasting cups, pennants or bowls. It is hard to imagine that only a few years ago, Kansas City was the joke of all professional sports cities.
