After a disappointing 2-1 loss to Honduras to start the ‘hexagonal’ round-robin fixture of the 2014 CONCACAF World Cup Qualifying, head coach Jürgen Klinsman and the USMNT is back on track to qualify.
On Friday, the USMNT came up with a crucial 1-0 victory over Costa Rica in controversial conditions. Heavy snow covered Dick’s Sporting Goods Park in Commerce City, CO that made referees consider stopping the game. However, USMNT players and Costa Rican players pleaded to continue.
After the match, the Costa Rican National Team filed a protest to FIFA saying that the 1-0 loss should be discounted because of conditions. FIFA looked into the match for further investigation and rejected Costa Rica’s protest. USMNT captain Clint Dempsey scored the only goal of the match off a rebound.
Yesterday night, the USMNT came up with only their second draw against Mexico in world cup qualifying history. The USMNT held on for a huge draw 0-0 against Mexico’s national stadium, Estadio Azteca in Mexico City.
Center backs Omar Gonzalez and Sporting Kansas City’s own Matt Besler in only his second career appearance stood out in the draw with big defensive stops to prevent Mexico from scoring.
Hopefully the USMNT is out of their slump and will fair well in the rest of the hexagonal games to qualify for the 2014 World Cup in Brazil. The next hexagonal game for the USMNT will be July 7 at Jamaica, time TBA.
