With the winter sports season winding down, the Bulldog Bulletin takes a look back on the best of the fall sports season. Last fall, the Bulldogs fall sports programs earned first place in Frontier League All-Sports finishing no less then third in each sport. Here’s a look at the Bulldog Bulletin’s fall sports awards for the 2012 fall season.
Best Male Athlete:
Dayton Valentine, football (SR)-The team captain of the Bulldog football team that reached a regional final against Piper. Valentine had a total of 61 tackles, 16 catches and two touchdowns. Valentine recently committed to Kansas State University’s football team.
Nick Joslyn, soccer (JR)-Team captain for the Bulldogs, while he also lead the team in points. Scored Baldwin’s first ever goal in a state quarterfinal match. Joslyn also gathered 1st Team All-State, 1st Team All-Frontier, 1st Team LJW All-Area and 1st Team All-Region honors.
Ethan Hartzell, boys cross country (JR)-Hartzell was the top runner for Baldwin, he placed fifth at the 4A State Cross Country Meet and earned 1st All-State, 1st All-Region, 1st Team LJW All-Area, and 1st Team All-Frontier League honors.
Winner:
Cornell Brown, football (JR)-Brown led the Bulldog football team with most rushing yards and filled in at quarterback when senior Tyler Cawley was injured. The versatile Brown helped lead the Bulldogs to a regional final. Brown had a total of 1486 rushing yards, 284 receiving yards, and 368 passing yards.
Best Female Athlete:
Kaitlin Jorgensen, girls tennis (SR)-Jorgensen was the only Bulldog to reach the 4A State Tennis Tournament in singles and went 2-2. Jorgensen’s four year experience lead the Bulldog tennis team this season.
Jordan Hoffman, volleyball (SO)-Hoffman was a very valuable addition to the Bulldog volleyball squad where she lead the team in kills. Hoffman gathered 2nd Team All-Frontier League honors and helped lead the Bulldogs in their 2012 campaign.
Winner:
Kaitlyn Barnes, Girls Cross Country (SR)-Barnes was an All-Frontier League and LJW All-Area recipient and a leader of the girls cross country team that earned third place at the 4A State Cross Country Meet.
Best Freshman Athlete:
Brendan Owings, soccer-Owings was only one of only two freshman on the Bulldogs varsity team and contributed at center midfielder and outside back. Owings scored the golden goal in overtime to down Spring Hill 5-4 in the Bulldogs first meeting. The win earned the Bulldogs their best start in school history.
Jake and Joel Katzer, football-Bulldog freshman Jake and Joel Katzer were running backs for the Bulldog football team that also stepped in and played linemen at times too. The two had a total of 330 rushing yards combined.
Winner:
Addie Dick, girls cross country-Dick earned All-State honors and placed 16th at the 4A State Cross Country meets to lead the Bulldogs to a third place finish. Dick also earned 1st All-Frontier League honors.
Best Senior Athlete:
Tyler Cawley, football-A four year varsity player for the Bulldogs and contributed every year. Cawley became a main leader from the quarterback position and had a total of 891 passing yards.
Katie Kehl, volleyball-Another crucial member of the Bulldog volleyball squad who gathered All-Frontier League honorable mention.
Mason Bandré, soccer-Moved to Baldwin sophomore year to become a big safety net in goal for the Bulldog soccer team. Bandré earned 1st team All-Frontier League, 1st Team LJW All-Area, 1st Team All-Region, and 1st Team All-State honors.
Winner:
Austin Kraus, soccer/football-Kraus was a four year varsity starter for the Bulldogs and was a vocal and defensive leader for the 2012 soccer squad. Kraus also kicked for the football team and made a total of 33 out of 36 PAT this season and was 3 of 4 in field goal attempts, his longest being 47 yards. Kraus earned All-State honorable mention for the Bulldog soccer team.
