Girls Wrestling has been one of the fastest-growing sports in America. Baldwin High School’s female and male wrestling teams had thoughts about the growth and how it has affected them.
60% of the girls’ wrestling team said that the girls’ program does affect the boy’s program. Meanwhile, about 70% of the boys said that it does not affect their program.
“I don’t think it does just because it can give boys more practicing partners if a would girl want to practice with the guy,” freshman Halia Callian said. “The only effect I see it would have the the amount of space on the mat.”
With the amount of effort, money, and time the community puts into the girl’s program only 10% of the team said that the program is not worth the effort.
“We’ve put in a lot of money to buy new singlets, like we had a raffle so that got us some new singlets which we really needed because our other ones were kinda crusty,” freshman Ellianna Lisher said. “Then we have a fundraiser that might go to new mats. If we have nice stuff then more girls might try and do it because we are kinda a sport that gets thrown the side.”
BHS is adding new sports all of the time, but none have taken off as fast as girls wrestling. Overall 96% of the team says that they do support the growth of girls wrestling and 89% say that Baldwin could use more female wrestlers.
“I think it’s a great sport and that it has grown a lot since I’ve started,” said freshman Paityn Whitaker.
