“I’ve been doing cow shows for about 7 years, but I’ve been around cows my whole life. I grew up working on Mayway Farms, and they really got me into farming and showing cattle. My favorite part of cow shows is getting to see friends I don’t normally get to see. Some of them I only see once a year. Kenzie Flory has always been a role model for me. She always helps me with stuff that I need help with, and she is always there to encourage me. Before shows can be kind of a hectic time for me. I show registered angus, and before shows you have to make sure their hair is dyed black, and that we feed them all the right stuff to look as good as they can. I wanted to start the Baldwin FFA chapter because Baldwin has never had an FFA program, and I know alumni from Baldwin who went to K-State for agriculture, and they were very behind the other people in their class because they didn’t have FFA training growing up. FFA stands for Future Farmers of America. We learn about agriculture, but we don’t only do that. It can help with life skills as well, like job interviews. Me and my family talked about it for a long time, and then I emailed the superintendent to ask why we didn’t have one. He said that he would like to have one, and he didn’t know why we didn’t. Then, I emailed the Junior High principal, and he said there really wasn’t a way to get one. I went to a school board meeting and presented to them why we should start the program at Baldwin. My dad kind of put the idea of FFA in Baldwin in my head. All of the officers at Baldwin get along very well, and it’s a really great community to be a part of. We’re all really good friends, and we all help each other with whatever we need.”
