Awarding children too much
The argument of awarding children too much, is a terrible argument. Many can’t pick one side or the other, because both sides have valid arguments. The fact of the matter is if we award everyone, not because of their effort or achievements. It will hurt them not just in the present, but also in the future.
According to the New York Times, giving kids awards regardless of their effort or achievements teaches kids that losing is so terrible that we can never let it happen.
Awards should be given based on how hard you work, and your success. Not of weather or not you participate. This teaches kids you have to work hard to succeed.
It is not to embarrass kids that don’t get a medal, it is to teach them a life lesson. It shows them that it takes time to get good at things. Kids need to know it is okay if they don’t win every time.
According to the New York Times, if kids who work hard, and show up every day, don’t get any recreation. They tend to lose interest in that sport.
This is why coaches need to acknowledge kids that work hard, it just needs to be in a lesser way than those who have success.
The argument of whether or not we award kids too much, needs to be rethought. It is not whether or not we award kids too much, it is whether or not we award the kids who try, more than we award the kids with success.
