Alumni: Kate Ogle
Many alumni when they graduate high school dream of going on to college to play a sport of their passion. BHS alumnus Kate Ogle was one of those alumni has been able to play collegiate basketball.
“College basketball is way more serious than high school basketball,” Ogle said. “You have to be able to push yourself mentally and physically every day, and at the same time, take care of your body.”
Going from a high school basketball team to a college team is a lot different. In high school player know all of their teammates because they grew up with them. That was one of the changes for Ogle.
“It’s hard for me to say that college basketball would be more fun since I was so blessed to be apart of the Baldwin basketball program throughout my high school career,” Ogle said. “Growing up with the people I played with in high school made my experience memorable.”
It’s very rare to be able to play with your siblings on the court or field. Ogle and her sister said otherwise, they played together on the same team and it was an unforgettable moment.
“I got to play with some of my best friends and my sister,” Ogle said. “I am glad where I am now because it has allowed me to realize how lucky I am to be coached by Brenda Shawley, Eric Toot, Katie Marten and Bob Martin, and to be surrounded by the community’s support.”
In college basketball there is more commitment than there is in high school, they still have to be committed to both sides but college basketball has more practices and if they are not able to do that than there is nothing for them.
“At a juco we have to work harder than everyone else because we haven’t made it to the next level yet, so we practice every day for 2-5 hours,” Ogle said. “everything we do has to be done with a purpose.”
“She is a very good athlete,” said Katie Martin, who coach Ogle in basketball at BHS.
