Many students experience peer pressure, whether it’s from home or school. Peer pressure can affect your mental health, when you are always at an expectation to high grades, to get into college, etc. However, peer pressure isn’t always a bad thing. It can push you to your goals and help you with laziness. Having goals and being determined can help you be an achiever.
Teachers, coaches, and parents can make students feel stressed about academics and sports. “I feel peer pressure from teachers because I think they expect too much from students,” a freshman girl said.
Baldwin High School students filled out surveys for peer pressure. One question asked students if peer pressure affects them in school. 38% of both males and females said they do feel pressure in school, while 62% of students said they don’t feel pressure from others in school. Another question asked if students felt forced into something in school before and 44% of students said yes, while 56% said no.
Even though students say no to peer pressure, there is still a decent amount of students who say they have peer pressure from others. 58% of students said that they don’t feel peer pressure during or from sports while 46% said that they do feel pressure from sports. It could be from teammates or coaches, but either way, peer pressure from sports can affect players negatively and positively.
On the last questions, students were asked if they had overcome peer pressure, and 42% of males and females said that they hadn’t overcome any peer pressure. 58% of students said that they have overcome peer pressure. Overall students usually have way too much pressure and need to be relieved from it in school and at home.
