Reaching a major milestone, Matthew McCune hit 100 wins as head coach of the Baldwin high soccer program.
“I have played soccer at a high level and internationally,” McCune said. “As a coach I have had the chance to play the game and see all the different strategies, nuances, and tendencies that make up the game from a first person point of view.”
McCune couldn’t have done it without the players and other coaches helping him along the way.
“I have had some AMAZING players that have been a part of the program,” McCune said. “The coaches have a mindset, a belief, a style of play and our players, over the years, have bought in and have been the biggest part of our success. There hasn’t been a lazy, selfish, or undetermined player come through our program.”
The players also have an opinion on what the key to success was.
“I think the work we do over the summer gives us a headstart on the season over the other teams,” senior goalkeeper August Boyle said.
With how long the Baldwin soccer program has been going on the team is bound to win or lose but when they win it’s great.
“There are the obvious best memories like playing for the 2022 State Championship, winning several Regional Championships (all on our home pitch) and winning a League Championship in 2023.” McCune said, “There are even the amazing team camps we do every other summer to Colorado or Minnesota, but truthfully, my best memories are just the relationships and experiences I get every year with my coaches and players, whether it is practice, games, team events or camps”
McCunes first win is history but who’s to say the 100th will be the last.
“But to me I love to win and most wins feel the same.” McCune said, “There are some that are a little more sweet and satisfying, the wins against league foes, wins on the road in hostile places to play, wins that bring records, and of course, winds that bring championships,”
