Once a year, during homecoming season, the students and staff at BHS elect senior candidates to run for homecoming king and queen. This year, the queen candidates were Claire Baker, Saylor Currie and Adalyn Madl. The king candidates were Hank Beard, Gunnar Reichard and Isaac Taylor.
“I was surprised to find out that I was a candidate out of all the other girls in my grade, because they are just as involved and dedicated,” Currie said.
But competing for royalty isn’t very competitive here at Baldwin High School.
“I was really glad to experience all the festivities with Claire and Addie, because we’ve been friends since our childhood and I knew we had a good group that all supported each other,” Currie said.
The end goal isn’t just to be announced the king or queen. It’s to make memories and relationships that will last even after graduating high school.
“I loved playing the games, the photo shoots, spirit days, and pep rallies with my friends and our relationships definitely made it better,” Beard said.
Not only does this event impact BHS, it also inspires the community.
“I enjoyed the community engagement I had, I loved working with the young kids and being so involved with the various pep rallies we had around the school system and in Sullivan Square,” Beard said.
The high school students voted for two of the candidates to be crowned king and queen. The winners were Beard and Currie.
“When I was announced king I honestly didn’t think much, it was just so surreal and amazing I couldn’t even grasp what happened,” Beard said.
