What makes the school purple, yellow and green every year? Mardi Gras of course.
Mardi Gras is a time when everyone can come together. It is one day a year when anyone and everyone can come have fun and make new friends.
“My mom always told me to be nice to everyone no matter what. To me no one is different so I will be friends with anyone,” senior MaecyLynn Wolff said.
We all greatly appreciate the impact of Mardi Gras, and many see it as a time to have fun and celebrate everyone’s uniqueness.
“Mardi Gras is important to me,” junior Olive Stacey said. “Mardi Gras is celebrating peoples difference as a whole. We play games, win prizes, have face painting, and genuinely have a good time all together! I love seeing the school come together and act as a community.”
This year, Josh Reynolds, a special education teacher, will run Mardi Gras. It will be his second year participating in the event.
“The theme for this year’s Mardi Gras is to Erase the Stigma,” Reynolds said. “We have a great community here at Baldwin High School but we all know that as a society there are some preconceived ideas of what people with disabilities can and cannot do. We are hoping to challenge those ideas and be strong allies for people with disabilities in the future.”
