The soccer team is off to a winning start with the record of 9-1-2. The field is also off to a winning start, thanks to team parents.
“It started off with my request for Coach Matt McCune to show me a couple of things we could do to make the field, and surrounding space, look better and give the boys something that they could be a little more proud of,” parent Megan Johnson said.
This project started as something small, but quickly grew into something much larger than expected.
“Once we got started, we realized that the brush had grown over trash and items that no one realized were covered and we ended up filling two trailers,” Johnson said. “One with trash, and one with scrap metal that was sold for scrap, with the money going half to the boys soccer team, half to the girls team.”
Johnson’s work made a huge impact on the team and parents getting more and more volunteers helping the team.
“The number of volunteers that came out was mind blowing,” Johnson said. “At times we didn’t have enough work or projects to keep everyone busy.”
Due to the parents’ support and help they got many things accomplished for their field including some of the following: built a field sign for the name of the field to be displayed on, and had the boys vote on a name for the complex, regraveled the drive with 3 tons of gravel, brush hogged the hill on the north side of the field, the entire length of the area, where the teams were constantly losing balls and the smaller shed was gutted, vacuumed and painted.
It can be important to have supportive parents willing to help the team, because that also makes a successful team.
“The support is always appreciated, but this year our parent support has been outstanding and incredibly beneficial to our program,” McCune said. “We want our players to be proud to be a part of this team for the way we play, the way we train but also for where we play. As coaches we also want this kind of parental support because the more things parents help out with the more the players feel appreciated and the more time coaches get to spend actually coaching and planning for training and games. It all goes hand in hand to make a successful season and a successful program.”
The Bulldog soccer team has been very successful for many years, and much credit goes to the not only the hardworking players, but also the supportive and helpful parents and coaches.
