BHS students make a choice for lunch

As the school year of 2018-19 has gone on, lunch has had a positive change for students who do not bring their own lunch. BHS students now have more lunch options rather than the one hot lunch or a sandwich bag the school always provides. When students enter the line to get a lunch there is a stand above the food stating what lunch option 1, 2 and 3 are.

“I think it is pretty cool our school has a variety of options for our lunch,” sophomore Shane Doty said. “When the lunch is something I don’t like I’m not forced to eat it even if I don’t pack a lunch.”

“It is nice we now have many options to choose from for lunch,” sophomore Brooklyn Chase said. “I do not have to eat the same thing every day.”

A study done by Kaiser Permanente shows that 90 percent of students eat the school lunch. The school lunches play a big role in the students day and have a long term effect after a while. After research was done it was shown school meal programs help prevent obesity and support healthier eating habits.

“I personally bring my own lunch to school,” freshman Madison Powell said “but I think it is important our school provides the proper amount of nutrients so students can perform at their best.”

BHS students are now thankful to have a choice in what they get to eat for lunch and are happy that they are eating healthy. Eating the school meal programs help the students eat healthier. When children pack their own lunch they can easily throw in bad, processed items leading to future health problems.

In a study lead by researcher Dr Charlotte Evans, it was shown that only 1.6 percent of lunch boxes met nutrition standards. Researchers examined kids’ lunch boxes and found that they were consuming a large amount of sugar.
