Fun times at Scholars Bowl

Scholars Bowl varsity team preparing to answer the next question

In 1986, students and staff alike fought for Scholars Bowl to be recognized by KSHSAA as activity, and to be allowed to acknowledge state championships.

“Scholars Bowl is a KSHSAA sponsored activity. Teams of 5 (plus one alternate) compete to answer questions in the following categories: World Language, Social Studies, Language Arts, Math, Science, Fine Arts and Year-In-Review” Scholars Bowl coach Autumn Weiss said.

The BHS Scholars Bowl team consists of Freshman, Sophomores, Juniors, and Seniors. You can join at the beginning of the year, and there are no specific requirements.

“You should be a team player. It is helpful to be very knowledgeable in at least one of the subject areas,” Weiss said. “And, as with all KSHSAA activities there is a participation fee.”

The JV and Varsity teams both participate in tournaments that the coaches sign up for at the beginning of the year.

“The meets are my favorite part of Scholars Bowl. The atmosphere is competitive, but Baldwin sure knows how to lighten the mood,” Junior Kayla Mountain said.

The team practices every Monday, Tuesday and Thursday from 3:30-4:30 after school.

“The connections I have made has to be my favorite thing about Scholars Bowl,” Mountain said. “I have made so many friends since my freshman year- it’s like we’re a little family. We all have so many inside jokes. I think our team does as well as they do because we all work together and have fun.”
