The United Nations has been in the news lately over events in Syria. Right now Baldwin High School students participating on this year’s Model U.N. team have an opportunity to express their opinions and learn how the U.N. works.
Past and current Model U.N. students and teachers both agree that it can be a good experience.
“I believe the Model U.N. helps students with their public speaking shills and writing skills,” History teacher and Model U.N. sponsor Kathleen Sigvaldson said. “It also helps the students on their knowledge of current events and the world.”
The Model U.N. started among several colleges in the 1950s then moved to the other levels of education. In Model U.N., teams of students send a delegate to one of the General Assemblies, one of which is going to be held in Wichita this year. At the General Assembly students will be given multiple topics to discuss and pass resolutions on.
The students are also given some choices. One of which is that they have a choice about which country they would like to represent.
“Right now I am having a tough decision trying to decide between Japan, the U.K. and Cuba,” junior Maverick Feldt said. “ But I will most likely choose the U.K. or Japan because of their culture.”
New members of the Model U.N. are looking forward to the experience that they will have.
“I think it will be very fun and educational,” Feldt said. “I am looking forward to public speaking, learning more about the world and making new friends in the process.”
The Model U.N. will soon start having meetings in Sigvladson’s room during seminar.
