Freedom of speech was pressed last week when a Shawnee Mission East High School senior tweeted a critical statement of Kansas Gov. Sam Brownback. Using her twitter account, emmakate988, the tweet was sent and could be seen by anyone.
“Just made mean comments at gov brownback and told him he sucked, in person #heblowsalot,” Emma Sullivan tweeted.
According to Politico Associated Press, there was no actual contact between Sullivan and Brownback. Sullivan claimed the statement was just a joke she had between her friends but Brownback’s staff thought otherwise. Her school principal pushed for her to write an apology letter to Brownback but Sullivan refused, claiming she isn’t sorry.
“I’ve decided not to write the letter but I hope this opens the door for average citizens to voice their opinion and be heard! #goingstrong,” Sullivan tweeted.
Brownback stated that his staff had over-reacted to the tweet and apologized on Monday, Nov. 27.
“Freedom of speech is among our most treasured freedoms,” Brownback said in the Lawrence Journal-World.
