Leaders Saylor Currie and Caden Hoffman are sharing their faith and creating a space where everyone is welcome when life gets hard.
Q: What is Refuge?
“Refuge is a Christian-based club that aims to provide a place of shelter from the storms of life. Whether anyone is facing fears in life, high-school anxieties, or mental struggles, there is a place for them at Refuge that is always welcoming and never required.”
Q: Why did you want to create Refuge?
“Over the summer, I did a bible study with Caden Hoffman, and we both attended the FCA Leadership Camp. We both felt called to encourage more students to participate in FCA. Although we love FCA and still think it’s an amazing club to be a part of, we know some students are deterred from the ‘Athletes’ title in its name, so we wanted to create a club that was solely based on how to navigate life through a mindset of faith.”
Q: When is your club?
“Our club meets every Tuesday morning at 7:30 in Mrs. Tannahill’s room.”
Q: When you attend, what would you expect to do?
“Every week, there is always a breakfast treat and a message. One of the best ways to lead is to get the audience involved, so we also like to include our members in activities and ask for their opinion on the subjects we talk about.”
Q: How many people attend the meetings?
“So far, we’ve had some up-and-down weeks with a generally low number of members. Still, we know God has a greater plan for our club, so we’re continuing to host it every week.”
Q: Who are the leaders?
“As of right now, Caden and I alternate leading each week, but we might have some other students lead soon.”
Q: How does this club create an impact on BHS?
“For me, I knew I needed to be more open with and express my faith more throughout BHS. Whether Refuge leaves an impact on only a few students or the entire school, we will continue to host this space if it ever may touch a student’s heart. I hope it is able to lead students as best it can to God’s love for them while also not creating an environment that is stereotypical or intimidating. “
