BHS alumni, Harley Stewart had decided to take the military route for his future. Stewart recently finished boot camp and is now on his way into the Air Force. He is very passionate about his career in the military and is starting off successfully.
Q: What branch of the military are you in?
“I am in the Air Force!”
Q:What made you choose this branch?
“I choose the Air Force because in my opinion they have more jobs that can transition over into the civilian work force after you would get out and I have really good friends in the Air Force that have always had a good work/life balance.”
Q: What are your future goals with it?
“My future goals for the Air Force are to hopefully make it a career for myself and would like to retire at a younger age than most. Another goal of mine while being in the Air Force is to use the free education they offer and get a bachelor’s degree in sports journalism!”
Q: Was basic training a difficult challenge?
“Basic training wasn’t as difficult as some may seem. It was more of a mental challenge for myself and not as much physical. You have to be able to push yourself mentally and get out of your comfort zone. The MTI’s are assigned to make you the best airman you can possibly be at the end of the day. They want you to pass and if you can get through the long hard days and pay attention to detail you can achieve a lot in basic training and beyond.”
Q: What have you done in your life that led you to finally make the decision?
“So I joined the Air Force this year at the age of 25. College wasn’t my thing right out of high school so I just started working a bunch of different jobs throughout the years not really able to find anything that I wanted to do for the rest of my life so I decided to make a change and moved in with a good friend of mine that is in the Air Force and he really influenced me about the Air Force and all it has to offer and I was really intrigued by it so I started talking to a recruiter and here I am now. One of the best decisions I have made in my life!”
Q: What are the best benefits of choosing a military route?
“I would say the benefits of going the military route would be to mainly find yourself and have the opportunity for professional growth as a person. If you want to get out of your hometown or if you just want free schooling or even to turn your life around like I did. There is no better feeling than escaping out of the ordinary and going after something so much bigger than yourself. The stories, the memories, friendships, experiences you can have in the military is second to none. The free health care, free housing, food, education, job security, and to serve your country in my opinion are the best benefits you could ever have.”
