Madeline Roger is a BHS Alumni from the Class 2009. After graduating she moved to Lawrence, studying dance at KU for a couple of years. She then decided to pursue her artistic career outside of the University. She spent ten years producing and performing in theater at Lawrence before moving back to Baldwin.
She was hired as the forensics coach last year and to her forensics was a big deal and it was one of her favorite things out of all the activities she participated in. Roger was very honored to be offered the job. This past year she was offered to be a para professional.
”I really like to be able to be here in both those capacities because it was hard to be a coach from the outside and now that I work inside, it’s all coming together,” Roger said.
She also works at Baldwin Creative Arts as a dance coach. She has seen many changes around BHS since her time as a student there. There are lots of things she’s seen change that she really likes including the bay. When she went to school the bay was full of lockers and now that it is a hang out area she believes that it helps boost moral and makes a fun place for kids to want to be here. A coach that inspired her to be the person she is today was retired English and Drama teacher and forensics coach, Katherine Cook. Cook was a wonderful mentor for Roger and she still is now that Roger took over the forensics team. Roger ended up loving coaching the team and being a para.
A word of advice Roger has for future BHS graduates.
“You should all use this time to do as many different things as you can, there are so many things that I maybe didn’t see the value in or didn’t see much interest in, but if I would’ve just tried it a little sooner I think I could’ve do a lot more with those things or learned a lot more.” She said.
