Humans of BHS: Karly Neufeld
“The Stand up to Cancer club has been around for many years, my older sister Madilyn was in the Stand up to Cancer club so I have grown into the club. Debbie Baldwin started the club around 2010 when Corey Valentine was in high school. I really like seeing our events come to life and seeing the community and school members support the causes that we are trying to raise awareness for and raise money for it. We have 2 events coming up for the club, one of them is Change for Change. In December we are raising money from the school district were each student brings in one dollar plus their change in age. So I am 17 so I would bring in $1.17. We are gonna donate it to the Ronald McDonald House for children who won’t get a normal holiday this Christmas. We are also going to make holiday ornament kits to donate to kids in the homeless shelter in Lawrence so they could make a Christmas Ornament and we are also going to the grocery store to put meals in a bag to donate to Hope House in Ottawa for families who need help making Thanksgiving meals. This club holds a special place in my heart because multiple of my family members and immediate family members have been affected by cancer so it feels good to me that I am helping them out in a round-a-bout way and try all I can to raise awareness for them. Mrs. Lyman is our sponsor right now and she helps out a lot but we have 3 other officers Lucy Gardner, Fisayo Afonja, and Lily Brecheisen. Fisayo will probably take over the club when I leave because she is the Vice President. Our club is made up of mainly girls and one boy so I am hoping that the freshman’s coming up next year will join since the club is back up and running.”
