Laura Beaulieu is a Special Education teacher at Baldwin High School. For the past five years, Beaulieu has put together Mardi Gras Diversity Day at the high school without a hitch. The students thought since Mardi Gras diversity is always so much fun and everyone enjoys it, Beaulieu should get teacher of the month.
Q: What was your reaction to be elected Teacher of the Month?
A: I was honored and surprised and pleased to be up with the other teachers who have been teacher of the month. It was very special because it came from the kids.
Q: How does winning teacher of the month make you feel about the way your student view you as a teacher?
A: It’s an honor because I don’t have very many students and it was a nice surprise to be recognized by the students. Mardi Gras helped realized what I do and it brought me awareness to volunteer that’s awesome too.
Q: Why did you become a teacher?
A: I wanted to help people. I started working as a houseparent and then I took a job here and was pleasantly surprised. I’m grateful to have a job I love.
Q: What is your favorite part about teaching?
A: I get to learn everyday because there is never a day where I come in and say, “I have all the answers.”
Q: If you could give your students one piece of advice what would it be?
A: Never give up and keep on going because even when you fail you are going to learn something and apply it to later life.
