'Transformers' leads summer box office

Another summer has passed which means that it has been another summer of blockbuster cinematic hits. Some were good and some were not so good. “Transformers: Age of Extinction” led the worldwide box office grossing over $1 billion this summer which made it the 19th film to surpass the $1 billion mark and the 12th highest grossing film of all time.

Though “Transformers” took the box office, among Baldwin students, “Guardians of the Galaxy” was the favorite with the combination of its music, storyline, comedy, and subtle references.

“As a band geek I liked how they incorporated old music into the background songs,” senior Maverick Feldt said. “The storyline was also good even though it was just a smash ‘em all up superhero movie there were still some steady scenes that helped character development.”

Feldt was not the only one that noticed and enjoyed the soundtrack and how it added to the story.

“I enjoyed the soundtrack very much, it must have cost like $3 billion or something,” senior Dylan Swain said. “But the way they incorporated the soundtrack, it wasn’t like cheesed into the movie. It really fit the story and helped the character development a lot and the way it is in the plot it is a very important part of the movie. I really enjoyed that.”

For some people that already knew the story before the movie came out it was even more special for them.

“Guardians of the Galaxy” was my favorite because I started reading comics when I was at the age of 4 and one of my first comics was Starlord himself and that grew off into my love of “Guardians of the Galaxy,” Junior Josh Swarb said. “And when the movie came out I was absolutely ecstatic and Marvel Studios did an amazing job portraying that movie.”

It may seem that everyone’s favorite was “Guardians of the Galaxy”, but there were also some other contenders for favorite movie of the summer.

“I would probably have to say that my favorite movie was “Edge of Tomorrow” with Tom Cruise,” senior Keifer Halpin said. “First of all, I’ve always been a real big fan of Tom Cruise movies. Second of all it was very action packed and futuristic which made it really enjoyable to watch.”

Movies that put humanity on the brink of extinction, like “Edge of Tomorrow”, are always a hit but ones that can more than just action, are the ones that become blockbusters.

“I liked “Dawn of the Planet of the Apes” because it wasn’t exactly a reboot but it was like a remake of the old movies and I really liked the new original one “Rise of the Planet of the Apes” and “Dawn” was really good because it just kept going,” senior Austin O’Rourke said. “I like the idea of apes slowly becoming more human like and advancing and being able to beat the humans because they don’t need all the things we need.”

For me it’s kind of a hard choice for my favorite movie but I would have to say that “Dawn of the Planet of the Apes” was my favorite. So this doesn’t have to be too wordy this is my list from most to least favorite….

1. “Dawn of the Planet of the Apes”

2. “Guardians of the Galaxy”

3. “Edge of Tomorrow” or “Godzilla”

4. “Hercules”

5. “Transformers” or “Expendables 3”

6. “TMNT”

And last and most certainly least

7. “Lucy”
